2012 OPEL ASTRA GTC DETAILED

Opel’s all-new Astra GTC is coming to Mzansi in 2012. These are the first official pictures of the car, along with engine and performance details. The GTC is derived from the normal 5-door Astra but features only 3-doors (two passenger and one rear). This is the second-generation GTC we’ve seen.

At launch the GTC will feature four different engine/ power combinations, although South Africa is likely to only sell one of these like previously. Bottom of the heap is the 1.4-litre turbo with a power output of 88kW/ 200Nm and 103kW/ 200Nm. Then there’s a 1.6-litre turbo worth a handy 132kW. Disappointingly this is lower than the previous GTC’s 147kW, albeit from a 2.0-litre turbo. Lastly the 2.0-litre CDTI is good for 121kW and 380Nm. This last motor, said to be able to cover 1100km on one tank, will definitely be out for SA as it is a turbo diesel. Just before the 2011 Frankfurt Motor Show the high-performance 213kW OPC will be unveiled, but it might be too late for JIMS. All the cars are front-wheel-driven by a 6-speed manual gearbox.

Opel dramatically improved the chassis of the car by lowering suspension by 15mm, at the same time stretching the wheelbase by 1cm. Something called the HiPerStrut or High Performance Strut is the basis for the front suspension system. It is designed to reduce torque steer while increasing cornering power, thus gaining time when taking corners.
