And so begins the year of reckoning for the all-new BMW M5, a year in which major changes are happening not only within BMW’s power corridors, but the entire industry itself. This short video clip is the first to tease the all-new M5, a car with such expectation on its shoulders that anything less than perceived perfection on its part will have critics seething.
The video of course doesn’t show much, except the car rushing through what looks like a dark tunnel, similar to ones occupied by the infamous Batman. It won’t help to slow it down either because the featured car is all camouflaged.
Nevertheless we know it’s based on the current 5 Series which means lots and lots of techno gizmos. Additionally we can expect a special rear M differential to help with handling and acceleration. Most importantly the biggest change for M5 is that it gets two turbos for the first time ever.
The suspected engine is already in circulation. It is a 4.4-litre V8 which in the X5 M and X6 M kicks out 408kW. In the M5 it should do about 440kW or so. A 0 – 100km/h sprint of around 4.2 seconds can be anticipated.
A “Concept” version of the M5 may appear at the 2011 Shanghai International Auto Show in China, with the real deal appearing at the Frankfurt International Motor Show in September. Whether it makes an appearance at the Johannesburg International Motor Show (JIMS) a month later will only be confirmed after Frankfurt. The car’s biggest competitor should be the new Mercedes-Benz CLS 63 AMG, with the Audi RS 6 and Jaguar XFR riding shotgun.
