The R7 million Porsche 918 Spyder is now open to order. Porsche announced that it will sell the car, based on the 918 concept, from 2013, soon after production begins in September of that year. To top it off, buyers will exclusively get their hands on a special edition 911 Turbo S coupe or cabriolet. Not for free though, but at the same price as what you pay today. Only 918 examples of the 918 Spyder will ever be built, making it highly exclusive, even for a Porsche.
A little about the figures. Porsche says the car will sport something just bigger than a 4.0-litre V8 petrol engine to go with the plug-in hybrid bits. The V8 will make about 370kW, with additional power coming from two electric motors placed on both rear and frontal axles. In total the entire system should pull out over 500kW and drive it via a double-clutch PDK gearbox. It should be able to drive purely on electricity for about 25km.
For all the performance, an incredible average fuel consumption of 3 litres per 100km and C02 emissions of 70 g/km are envisaged. The 0 – 100km/h sprint is already claimed to be 3.1 seconds and Porsche expects the 918 to sprint around the Nurburgring’s Nordschleife faster than the old Carrera GT at 7 minutes and 30 seconds flat.
Prices will be US$845 000 in the United States and €645 000 in Europe. SA prices will be significantly higher due to import duties, taxes and so on.
