ANOTHER ILLEGAL STREET DRAG ENDS IN DEATH

Once again reaction is pouring in thick and fast against illegal street racers following a horrific crash in Pretoria two nights ago. Three people are reportedly dead, including the driver of a red Fiat Uno (pictured here). Reports say the four cars involved were a BMW X3, a Nissan 350 Z, a Fiat Uno and a Volkswagen Jetta. Transport Minister S’bu Ndebele has issued a strong statement against illegal drag racing.

“We want to convey condolences to the families of those killed in the horrific road crash in Voortrekkers Road in Pretoria,” he said. “Law enforcement officers are expected to know where these illegal drag races are taking place, and must stop it even before it starts. If we have to confiscate vehicles, we must do it. If it means that the driving licences of those participating in these illegal races must be suspended and/or cancelled, it must be done.”

Ndebele went on to encourage those with severely itchy right feet and an equally competitive streak to rather look for legal outlets for their mad foot disease.

“We will even assist to arrange legal races, but illegal drag racing will not be tolerated and those who engage in such activities must face the full might of the law. We also urge the public to get involved in the fight against illegal drag racing and to report it immediately”, he stated.

The said illegal races are apparently a frequent occurrence on that road. Residents say almost every Sunday night cars as well as spectators line up for these head-to-heads. Yet no visible law enforcement is to be found anywhere. But Metro police have defended themselves by saying the dragsters are being tipped off about planned sting operations, possibly by cops themselves.

Just over a year ago rapper and TV presenter Jub Jub was arrested for allegedly being involved in a street drag that claimed the lives of several school boys. His and co-accused Themba Tshabalala’s trial is currently ongoing. The pair is facing charges of murder, attempted murder, as well as reckless and negligent driving.
