On Monday, 6 September 2011 Cape Town Grand Prix SA (CTGPSA) signed a strategic partnership agreement with a consortium of business and motorsport professionals headed by Dave McGregor, the former event organiser of the 1992 and 1993 Formula One Grand Prix (F1GP) in South Africa.
“We see this partnership as a major milestone in our bidding process,” said Igshaan Amlay, Founder and Chief Executive Officer of CTGPSA. “Dave and his team bring a wealth of business and motorsport expertise and experience to the table and I am confident that our joint force will play a pivotal role in escalating the bid to the next level.”
The consortium’s executives are all respected leaders in their own fields who have skillfully crafted the model to deliver world-class motor racing events of any complexity or scale. Their vast motorsport event experience has positioned them as the authority on motor racing management, event promotion, sponsorship and investment procurement, as well as government liaison at a national and international level. Having successfully staged two F1GP events in South Africa, the group’s CEO Dave McGregor has established a proven track record and strong working relationship with Formula One Management (FOM) boss Bernie Ecclestone and his team.
“Since our initial talks with CTGPSA, it was apparent that theirs is a concept that not only makes economic sense within a South African context, but it does complete justice to the world-wide spectacular that is the F1GP,” commented McGregor. “Having delivered what the world thought was unimaginable in 1992, we can relate to the passion and enthusiasm of Igshaan and his team and of turning their vision into reality."
Affectionately known as "Mr Motorsport" in South Africa, Dave McGregor has been involved in the sport since the early '80s. Major accolades include: Managing Director, Kyalami Grand Prix Circuit; Event Organiser, FIM World Superbike Event – Kyalami; Event Organiser, Vodacom Power Tour (Local Motor Racing Series); Project Director, SA Production Car Series; Event Organiser, Durban MINI Nation Street Race; Event Organiser, Altech F1x2 Grand Prix of South Africa; Event Organiser, SA Grand Prix Masters; and Event Organiser, FIM World Motocross Grand Prix – Sun City. In addition, he has negotiated many television broadcast packages for all of the aforementioned local and international events and motorsport series.
CTGPSA was established in 2007 on the back of a rigorous research and conceptual development process initiated in 1999 by Igshaan Amlay, visionary, entrepreneur and former political prisoner. The aim is to bring F1GP back to South African soil as an annual fixture on the GP calendar. The concept proposes a street race in what today is known as the Green Point Sport Tourism Precinct, incorporating the full utilisation of the Cape Town Stadium; Fan Park; and other proud legacies of the 2010 Soccer World Cup.
Our vision is to develop the motorsport business sector to strategically benefit government, local business and the local community, whilst generating significant media impact and growth in tourism, business and employment for South Africa.
“As a unified team sharing the same vision, it is the resolve of CTGPSA and our new partners to jointly propel what has now become OUR bid, to the next level, declared Amlay. “As the father of our nation Nelson Mandela once said, ‘It’s only impossible until it happens.’”
